I can still recall the first time I ever saw the exceptional work by North Queensland born artist Christopher May. I was invited to speak at the 'Townsville Fishing and Outdoor Expo' where the first of a unique series of prints on fishing by Chris was the major raffle prize. Although I invested a large amount in tickets, I was not the lucky winner. Needless to say, I tracked the artist down and ordered the limited edition 'Barramundi' which is now sold out.
I have lost count of the amount of people who walk into our house and are instantly drawn to the series of prints that I have displayed on the walls. My only problem now is, due to the expansion of the series, I may need a larger wall to fit them all in
Since that time, Chris has released a further 3 limited edition prints, 'Coral Trout', 'Mangrove Jack' and 'Rainbow Trout'. They are all an absolute must for anyone with even the slightest interest in art and a love of fish and fishing. Each individual print is limited to only 800 prints and once sold out there are no reprints; a fact that made itself evident when the 'barramundi' sold out and left many people wishing they had got in earlier.
The detail in the pencil drawn prints is nothing short of spectacular. Many people have been drawn into the fine detail that Chris prides himself on. This is a genuine demonstration of person's real love of the natural world that is carried though to his attention to detail in his art. To make a point of this, each print has a miniature drawing inside the eye of the fish it's beyond me how this is done.
To ensure the detail and countless hours that Chris puts into each print are not lost, he uses a combination of high-grade acid free paper (Mohawk Superfine - 352gsm), light fast inks and state of the art printing techniques. This means that when you frame and hang one of these limited edition prints on your wall, you have a high quality genuine piece of art that will only grow in value and maintain centrepiece status for many years to come.
At the date of this edition going to print, Chris has just released another print to add to the collection that is sure to sell very quickly if the past is any indication. The newest print to add to your collection is a jumping barramundi. The new barra is in portrait style, which is unlike the others in the set and it has a fly in the mouth of the fish with the detail in the eye showing a girl on a jetty.
To give you some indication of the desirability of these prints, the original was sold sight unseen when Chris was only half way through the work, and of the limited 800 prints, 400 have already been sold. This is all before they have even been viewed or printed. That in itself is testimony that this is truly a remarkable person with a real talent for the finer details.
In the future (and you heart it first here) Chris is planning to do two more prints with the barramundi as the focus. One will be the detailed skeleton of the barra and the other will be a juvenile barra. Both are sure to be absolute winners and I already have my name down to order them.
